Domaine
Michel Noellat
Noëllat is a popular name across the Côte de Nuits, this estate is already seeing it’s 6th generation in charge, the story began in the 19th century, the estate was founded by Felix Noëllat, brother of Charles Noëllat (which gave way to the Hudelot-Noëllat estate). Henri Noëllat, Felix’s Grandson married Marie Therèse Jayer and had Michel Noëllat who renamed the estate.
After Michel’s death in 1989, his sons Alain and Jean-Marc Noëllat took over the reigns of the estate, Sophie, daughter of Alain Noëllat and her cousin Sebastien are now in charge of the winemaking.
Located in Vosne-Romanée, right next to the Domaine Leroy, the estate counts 27ha, a substantial size according to Burgundy’s standards, with a total of 23 different appellations ranging from Marsannay to Pommard.
The wines are well-executed portraits of their respective terroirs, it’s fantastic how the estate can manage such a wide range of very diverse appellations and achieve such consistent quality.
The style is of nice concentration well balanced with freshness and juicy fruit.
With vines averaging 60-70 years, a reduced reliance on oak, and the adoption of a pragmatic investment strategy, quality has been on the rise since they began working together. Their entire range is wonderful, the wines deep, round and super-generous, the tannins soft like graphite, the terroir shining through.
Of all the Noëllat domaines, this is the one to follow. Mark our words: prices are going to rocket.
