Weingut Prager is run by Toni Bodenstein, son-in-law of Franz Prager and one of the most celebrated winemakers in Austria today.

Toni has run the estate for a number of years now and is the foremost authority in the region on the hugely diverse microclimates across the valley. Earnest but very likeable, he has made a minute geological study of this extraordinary terroir. Southfacing and running down to the Danube, his Achleiten vineyard yields both Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the top Smaragd classification.

In short the wines are incredibly rich but also fresh and crisp.

The winery Prager owns most of the sites in the nearby area, in the Achleiten area. In many cases in southern exposure, but at the same time not only in geologically interesting formations, but for the most part in cool high altitudes.

Toni Bodenstein is a geologist and soil scientist by birth and does not come from a family of winegrowers. However, during his studies he started experimental winemaking with friends purely for fun and pleasure.

In the first years of the “new generation” at the winery Prager, Toni Bodenstein then bought some additional vineyards and pushed out others, the goal was the better geological composition of the soils and the cooler location. The new sites are accordingly today the best quality sites of the winery Prager.

Toni Bodenstein then additionally planted in 1990 for the long-term improvement of the vines and to maintain the broad gene pool (EC approved and supported), over a hundred years old, proven Riesling vines in the Achleiten. Vines he sought and found from the best winegrowers and from the oldest vineyards in the whole country. He then made the same game 10 years later with Grüner Veltliner.

These wines, which are probably the most original in the Wachau, represent some of the best Grüner Veltliner and Riesling produced in the Wachau. The variety produce immensely complex wines.

Toni Bodenstein is also almost revolutionary in vineyard management, without therefore belonging to the biodynamicists. But hardly anyone takes nature-centeredness as extremely seriously as he does. He sees the wholeness of the plant and the active and inactive exchange of the plant with the soil and the deeper layers, the fungal cultures and with nature as a whole. So the work is done as natural as possible, each vine is treated differently, depending on its needs. Naturally, there is no use of herbicides or pesticides.

The winery Prager represented the spearhead of the new and pure quality in the Wachau even before the new “Junge Wilden” like Pichler-Krutzler and Veyder-Malberg.

The winery Prager is probably one of the benchmarks par excellence for contemporary wineries, a role model in every respect.
